Can social networking (such as Facebook) work for my business? If so, how?

Whereas a century ago it would take months for a handwritten message to travel between Fiji and any other continent, it is now common place for thirty of your ‘friends' around the world to know that you are drinking a cup of coffee even as you are doing it!

Social networks have been around for centuries, and even the term has already existed for over a century. However, none of our ancestors would have predicted the extent to which technology has aided the explosion in size and dynamism of our social networks. Undoubtedly, the world is a 'smaller place’ since the mass adoption of half a dozen key social websites, most famous being Facebook and MySpace. But can social networking work for your business? As with all marketing, having a clear strategy is crucial to your success. Poor planning will almost certainly lead to poor results. But, if you have done your homework, identified your target audience, and correctly positioned your product or service, most businesses will find social networking a powerful ally.Sites like Facebook and MySpace leverage two key opportunities which are rarely found (or at least harnessed) in any other situation.

Firstly, they provide the forum in which word- of-mouth personal recommendation can spread exponentially (to large groups of people rather than just one or two) in seconds, and the same action can be repeated hundreds of times within a single day or, sometimes, even within an hour.

Secondly, they contain an immense audience of carefully profiled users, allowing you to target a paid advertisement directly to a carefully defined demographic on the basis of age, gender, relationship status, relational interests - in fact, you can even target a message directly to employees of a particular company!

So, understanding these abilities, how might you use social networking sites to the maximum effect?

Events

Want to create a buzz with an exciting launch or publicity event? Facebook and MySpace both allow you to promote an

'event' for free. Type in all the details in their special ‘event’ forms, include it in the searchable public list of events, and invite  all vour contacts who you feel are relevant. Make sure you encourage them to tell their friends about it too, and perhaps add an incentive for people to book and/or show up.

Causes

Does your business have a socially responsible or altruistic angle? Create a 'cause’ (Facebook) and get people to spread the word to their friends. For example, ‘Buy fair trade coffee and help the world’s poorest countries’.

Recruiting

All you have to do is make a mention on your personal profile that you are looking for a graphic designer, book keeper, or architectural draftsman, and within hours you will have scores of your friends and acquaintances considering whether they know somebody who would be suitable.

On Facebook, you can also advertise your job opportunity for free in the Marketplace.

Advertising

Of course, you may want to advertise in ways that fall outside the above categories, and that is why Facebook offers paid advertising opportunities. (MySpace does too, but it is a more involved process requiring a greater level of commitment.) Unlike traditional advertising, you have the flexibility to display your ad only to users who meet your criteria, right down to their age, gender, employer’s name, education level, or a keyword in their profile and pay accordingly. There are very few fixed 'rules’ about how to get the best results out of online social networks, but undoubtedly the combination of lightning fast word-of-mouth and pinpoint accuracy in targeting advertisements add up to incredible potential for amazing results!
